Richard Stacks Photography

Turner Auctions + Appraisals is pleased to present photographs by Richard Stacks on October 6, 2018, at 10:30 am PST. The sale features 36 color works of the Bay Area by this award-winning photographer, plus two black-and-white photographs by the famed photographer Dorothea Lange.

Born in 1930 and a native of Baltimore, MD, Richard Stacks had no formal photography training. His interest began at Baltimore’s City College, where he took pictures of dances and sporting events, then continued as he worked as a door-to-door baby photographer. In 1991 he was hired by the Baltimore Sun and, in 1955, won Honorable Mention Photographer of the Year in a national contest sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association. Known for his mastery of light and composition, he described himself as part pictorialist and part photojournalist. Stacks was also acclaimed for his photographs of animals, and cats in particular, which appeared in greeting cards, calendars and posters around the world. A long-time resident of Pacifica, CA, Stacks passed away in 2015.
